The Film Foundry was formed in 1997 by Scott Kecken and Joy
Lusco Kecken. The pair met at Towson University in 1995. Their first
collaboration, Louisville, starred Emmy award-winner Andre Braugher.
It was screened at over 30 film festivals and won over 10 awards, including
best short at the New York Independent International Film Festival. After
receiving grants from the Maryland Arts Council and the Maryland Humanities
Council, they began their feature-length documentary, We Are Arabbers,
about Baltimore's horse-and-wagon produce vendors. While in post-production
on the documentary, they completed another short narrative film, Woman
Hollering Creek. Scott and Joy were married in 2002 and live in Pennsylvania
with their son.
Joy
Lusco Kecken
Joy Lusco Kecken is a writer, producer and director. She has writing
credits for the award-winning Television series, Homicide: Life on
the Street and The Wire. In 1998, she co-wrote the 100th episode, season
finale of Homicide, which TV Guide voted the Top Ten Best Show of the
Year. She has also written for MTV and Lifetime Networks.
In 1999, she received the Individual Artist Award for Screenwriting
from the Maryland State Arts Council, while winning the award previously
in 1997 and 1995. She wrote and co-directed the short film, Louisville,
starring Emmy award-winning actor Andre Braugher. The short won acclaim
and awards throughout its festival run including Best Short from the
New York Independent International Film Festival, a Jury Award from
the Atlanta Film and Video Festival and the Lumiere Award from the
New Orleans Film and Video Festival.
In support of the film community, Joy joined the Advisory Board for
the Maryland Film Festival in 2003. In 2001 she programmed the Women
In Film and Video festival, Diverse Voices. She also mentored members
of a Girl Scout troop in a video production on self-expression, Teen
Voices. She worked in Toronto on the new Jim Sheridan directed
50 Cent biography movie, Get Rich or Die Trying. Her co-written feature
narrative, Maker of Saints, will soon be in production, starring Erykah
Badu. Recently, Joy was hired as a Story Producer for a new reality
TV series, Random 1, airing on the A&E channel.
Scott
Kecken
Scott has been producing and directing narrative and documentary films
for the past twelve years. In 1997, he formed The Film Foundry with
his partner, Joy Lusco. Their first collaboration, Louisville, screened
at over thirty festivals and won eleven awards and aired on BET, PBS
and Showtime.
In 1999, he received the Individual Artist Award in Filmmaking from
the Maryland State Arts Council. His latest work on Baltimore's horse-and-wagon
produce hucksters, We Are Arabbers, was awarded production grants from
the Maryland Humanities Council and Maryland State Arts Council. Shot
and edited on digital video by Scott, the documentary was completed
in Fall 2004.
In between projects, he and his partner Joy released a second award-winning
narrative short, Woman Hollering Creek, which is currently in the film
festival circuit. Scott is full-time faculty in the Film, Video and
Theatre department at Villa Julie College in Stevenson, Maryland and
is co-founder of Baltimore's first media co-operative, Creative Alliance
movie makers (CAmm).
